Okinawan Dance

The library proudly presents this cultural demonstration for all ages!  Featured dancer Charlene Gima, recipient of the HSFCA Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program, and Jimpu Kai USA Kin Ryosho Ryuku Geino Kenkyusho will perform Okinawan dance, including kumi wudui, the classical dance drama of Okinawa. 
Director and instructor, Cheryl Yoshie Nakasone studied under celebrated dance master Ryosho Kin in Okinawa.  Under Kin sensei, she became the first foreign-born to complete all levels of the rigorous Ryukyu Shimpo Geino Konkuru examinations and in 1977, was awarded the title of shihan. She is currently a lecturer at the UH Manoa Department of Theatre and Dance and teaches at her studio in Honolulu and on Maui.
