Databases by Subject

The Hawaii State Public Library subscribes to dozens of online databases. Because these are licensing agreements with the database providers, you will need your HSPLS library card number and PIN (personal identification number) in order to access these databases from outside a HSPLS library. provides full text for nearly 1,950 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, it also includes 316 full text reference books, 88,000 biographies, 83,500 primary source documents, and an image collection of 107,000 photos, maps and flags.

InfoTrac Custom 1000 Journals

provides full text in general reference and academic publications, covering nearly every subject area of interest.

JSTOR

offers a high-quality, interdisciplinary archive to support scholarship and teaching. It includes archives of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. The entire corpus is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images, and is interlinked by millions of citations and references. Newspaper Source

provides selected full text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Agriculture

Agricola: contains bibliographic records from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Library. Coverage for AGRICOLA dates back to 1970 and includes more than 2.5 million citations. The citations are comprised of journal articles, monographs, theses, patents, software, audiovisual materials, and technical reports related to agriculture. Now a full text database.

Animals

EBSCO Animals: provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Anthropology

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection: provides coverage of more than 500 full text journals, including nearly 500 peer-reviewed titles. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Auto Repair Reference Center: contains complete automotive repair information supplied by Nichols Publishing, former publisher of Chilton information, and information from Delphi Integrated Service Solutions. The database contains information on most major manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles, with repair information for most vintage makes starting as far back as 1954. Biography Resource Center: integrates award-winning biographies from respected Gale sources with related full-text articles from hundreds of magazines and newspapers, as well as tens of thousands of images and links to vetted websites. Search for people---both current and historic from all eras and fields of endeavor---based on name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, or gender, as well as keyword and full text. Global Books in Print from home | Global Books in Print from library: the world's largest Web-based bibliographic resource for professionals--an unbiased, authoritative, and comprehensive database of over 9 million book, audio book, and video titles.
NoveList: contains materials for all ages including picture books, children's "chapter" books, young adult titles and books for adult readers. Updated monthly, the database integrates information from a variety of sources. The Hennepin County Library is the main source of the enhanced subject access contained in the NoveList database. NoveList contains full-text reviews for adult, young adult, children's and easy fiction titles from several journals, including: Booklist, School Library Journal, Library Journal and Publishers Weekly. In addition to these reviews, there are annotations and summaries, and all of them are searchable!
NoveList K-8: contains materials for all K-8 grade levels and includes picture books, children's "chapter" books and young adult titles. Users can also browse hundreds of theme-oriented book lists for readers at all grade levels through Explore Fiction, and look for award-winning and recommended titles in Best Fiction. Business Source Premier

provides full text for nearly 2,340 scholarly business journals, including full text for nearly 1,130 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 300 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922. Additional sources included are over 1,400 country economic reports, 10,000 substantial company profiles, 3,153 idustry reports and 528 market research reports.

Global Terrorism Database (GTD): is an open-source database presenting information on terrorist events around the world since 1970 (currently updated through 2004), including data on where, when, and how each of almost 80,000 terrorist events occurred. The main types of information found in the GTD are items that you would expect to find in a well written newspaper story about a terrorist attack: the type of attack, the number of persons killed, the group claiming responsibility, the date of the event and so on. American Indian History Online via Facts on File
