Best-selling author Robert Walker will share his experience in the region. His book, Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands, covers the 150 islands in the Ryukyu chain, about 75 of which are inhabited. Over a 10-year-period, he has visited every inbabited island in the chain--many of them three or four times. The book has filled a vacuum in an all-in-one introduction to traveling in contemporary Okinawa and the Ryukyus that was not met before. Find out also why the Okinawans are known as the longest-lived people on earth. The book will be available for purchase after the program.

Jazz with Dean Taba

Have a jazzy afternoon at Aina Haina! Musician Dean Taba will present a selection of songs from the greats througout the age of jazz presented in a jazz duo format. Dean is a highly regarded studio and freelance musician who began his musical studies on the piano at the age of 6 and played French horn in the Hawaii Youth Symphony. It was a desire to play in the high school jazz band that introduced him to the bass and improvised music. After extensive studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a refinement of his skills on both the acoustic and electric bass, Dean relocated in 1984 to Los Angeles to become one of its most in-demand musicians.

Kenny Endo & Taiko Center of the Pacific

The cultural program will demonstrate taiko in group and festival drumming. Tako master Kenny Endo composes his own music and plays taiko professionally as a solo artist, with his ensembles, and in collaboration with other artists. Mr. Endo and his taiko ensembles have performed extensively all over the United States, Japan, and throughout the world. This one-hour program is suitable for all ages.
